Changes to VAT rates 2025
There will be changes to the VAT rates from 1 January 2025. Goods and services currently subject to the reduced VAT rate of 10% will be transferred to the reduced VAT rate of 14%.
However, the change does not apply to newspapers, magazines or broadcasting, meaning they will continue to be subject to the reduced VAT rate of 10%.
Among other things, the following goods and services will be subject to a 14% VAT rate from 2025:
- books (printed and electronic publications)
- medicines
- sports services, such as the sale of game and gym passes, tennis, golf, ice rink and sports passes, and ski lift tickets
- admission to cultural, entertainment and sporting events, such as theatre, circus, fairs, amusement parks, concerts, museums, zoos, cinemas, exhibitions, and live streaming of such events
- passenger transport (buses, trains, taxis, domestic air transport)
- accommodation services (hotels, motels, guest houses, farm accommodation, camping sites for tents, camper vans and caravans, and cottage rentals)
- fees received by a performing artist, athlete or other public performer, if the recipient of the fee has applied to be liable for VAT for this activity.
Menstrual pads, incontinence pads and children’s diapers will be moved from the current general tax rate of 25.5% to a reduced tax rate of 14%.
In addition, preparations are underway to increase the tax rate on sweets and chocolate from 14% to 25.5%. The change is expected to come into effect on June 1, 2025.
